Beginning Grant-in-Aid-- Western States Affiliate
To promote the independent status of promising beginning scientists. Proposals are encouraged from all basic, behavioral, epidemiological, and community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems.
Amount of funding: $70K/year over 2 yrs
Eligibility: Instructors and assist. prof. with PI eligibility and CE assist. prof. (with an approved PI waiver). Applicant at the time of activation must hold a faculty/staff rank up to and including assistant professor (or equivalent), but may not have more than seven years of experience at the assistant professor level.

Grant-in-Aid-- Western States Affiliate

To encourage and adequately fund the most innovative and meritorious research projects from independent investigators.
Research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts.
Amount of funding: $70K/yr x 2 years
Eligibility: assist. prof. with PI eligibility and CE assist. prof. (with an approved CE Faculty PI waiver)
Instructors are not eligible because those positions are not considered “independent” positions here at Stanford.

National Innovative Research Grant
To support highly innovative, high-risk, high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the field of cardiovascular and stroke research.
Amount of funding: $75K/yr x 2 years
Eligibility: Have a faculty (or faculty equivalent) appointment: faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver)
Instructors are not eligible because they are not considered to be in faculty-level appointments at Stanford.

Guidelines



National Established Investigator Award
To support mid-career investigators with unusual promise and an established record of accomplishments; candidates have a demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science as indicated by prior publication history and scientific accomplishments. A candidate's career is expected to be in a rapid growth phase.
Eligibility: mid-career faculty with PI eligibility and mid-career CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver)
Have current national-level funding as a principal investigator (or co-PI) on an R01 grant or its equivalent (e.g., VA Merit Award, NSF Grant, or PI of a project on a Program Project Grant from NIH). To encourage submissions from clinical investigators, epidemiologists, and translational scientists, individuals with significant funding from national-level peer reviewed clinical and multicenter trials and/or other clinically-oriented grants will be considered (e.g., U01, UL1, and equivalent awards).

National Scientist Development Award

To bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator.

This RFP supports clinical and basic science research in congenital heart disease-including but not limited to these areas: molecular genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology devices, and procedural research (cardiac cauterization and surgery) and long-term care of adults with congenital birth defects,.

Transatlantic Networks of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research Program

Purpose: to promote collaborative research between academic centers in North America and Europe in the areas of cardiovascular and
neurovascular disease.

Progeria Research Foundation
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome ("Progeria", or "HGPS") is a rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. Children with Progeria die of atherosclerosis (heart attacks or strokes) at an average age of thirteen years.
Innovator Awards: 2-year awards of up to $75,000 per year; faculty with PI eligibility
Established Investigator Awards: $100K per year x 3 yrs; senior faculty with PI eligibility

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation
Sarnoff Fellowship Program
(Medical students)
The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research facility in the United States, other than the medical school in which they are enrolled.
Eligibility: Although applicants may have prior research experience, applications are also encouraged from students without extensive prior research experience.
NOT eligible. Applicants enrolled in an MD/PhD program will not be eligible for a Sarnoff Fellowship.
Applications are encouraged from second and third year medical students. Fourth year medical students are required to submit an official letter from their medical schools granting graduation deferment.
Fellows will be assigned mentors.
There are no citizenship requirements for application, but those who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa.

Marfan syndrome is caused by a defect (mutation) in the gene that tells the body how to make fibrillin-1 -- a protein that is an important part of connective tissue. Marfan syndrome features are most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints, and eyes. Sometimes the lungs and skin are also affected
