NSF Medical Research/Disease-related goal restrictions
NSF Grant Proposal Guidelines Chapter 1. B:
Unless otherwise stated in the program guidelines, research with disease-related goals, including work on the etiology, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental disease, abnormality, or malfunction in human beings or animals, is normally not supported. Animal models of such conditions or the development or testing of drugs or other procedures for their treatment also are not eligible for support.
Exceptions:
However, research in bioengineering, with diagnosis- or treatment-related goals, that applies engineering principles to problems in biology and medicine while advancing engineering knowledge is eligible for support. Bioengineering research to aid persons with disabilities also is eligible."

Faculty Early Career Development Program

Purpose: This is the NSF’s most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
PECASE: Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from among the most meritorious recent CAREER awardees. You do not apply for the PECASE. Directorates will nominate certain CAREER award recipients for this award. PECASE requires that applicants be U.S. citizen, U.S. National or U.S. permanent resident by the time of the application.
Amount of funding:
The minimum CAREER award, including indirect costs, will total $400,000 for the 5-year duration with the following exceptions: proposers to the Biological Sciences Directorate (BIO) or the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) must submit budget requests for a minimum of $500,000 for the 5-year duration. 400 to be awarded. The PECASE award is an honorary award for all NSF recipients and does not provide additional funds.
Eligibility: Stanford assistant professors with UTL appointments
Individuals must have a doctoral degree in a field supported by NSF
Associate Professors, Instructors and academic staff members are not eligible for this award.
PIs may only submit one CAREER application per annual competition and may only participate in 3 CAREER competitions. Applicants must not have received a CAREER award (prior or concurrent Federal support for other types of awards or for non-duplicative research does not preclude eligibility)
