How to find the Hardware Address of Your Device

A Hardware Address is a 12-digit number, starting with a 0, and consisting of numbers 0-9 and letters A-F. It is unique (like a serial number) to each network interface. Depending on the device or operating system, it can also be referred to as a MAC address, Physical Address or Ethernet ID.

For PC Users (WinNT/2000/XP/Vista)

  1. Pull up/down the Start Menu to "Run".
  2. Type in "cmd" and hit return. This opens up a DOS window.
  3. Type "ipconfig /all" in the DOS window.

Your Hardware Address should be listed as the "Physical Address" for your Ethernet and/or wireless adapter under their respective headings.

For Macintosh users (MacOS X)

  1. Open the System Preferences
  2. Click on Network

MacOS 10.5/10.6

  1. Click on "Built-in Ethernet" (and/or “Airport”)
  2. Click on the Advanced button
  3. Click on the “Ethernet” tab
  4. Carefully copy down the Ethernet ID displayed there

MacOS 10.3/10.4

  1. Pull down "Show" to "Built-in Ethernet" (and/or “Airport”)
  2. Click on the “Ethernet” tab (and/or “Airport”)
  3. Carefully copy down the Ethernet ID displayed there

For Handheld devices

iPhone

  1. Tap the Home button and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address and carefully copy down the number displayed there.
  5. Tap the Home button to return to the Home screen.

Windows Mobile PDA/smartphones

  1. Click the Start menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Connections.
  4. Tap Wireless LAN.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Tap MAC and carefully copy down the number displayed there.

BlackBerry smartphones

  1. Click Options.
  2. Click Status.
  3. Carefully copy down the number displayed in the WLAN MAC field.

Legacy Operating Systems

For PC Users (Win95/98/ME)

  1. Pull up/down the Start Menu to "Run".
  2. Type in "winipcfg" and hit return.
  3. This opens up a graphical window with your TCP/IP networking information in it.
  4. There is a drop down menu in WinIPCfg of your adapters. If not already selected, pull it down to your Ethernet card (and/or Wireless card).
  5. Do not give us the PPP adapter address.
  6. Your Hardware Address should then be listed in WinIPCfg as the "Adapter Address".
