H4A Seminar: Current Topics and Controversies in Women's Health

Date & Time: Wednesday, August 10, 2016: 9am-5:30pm (with breaks for coffee/snacks and lunch)

Schedule: Seminar runs from 9am-5.30pm. Includes a morning break from 11-11:15am, lunch from 12:15-1:15pm, and an afternoon break from 3:15-3:30pm. The seminar presenters for the day may need to adjust these times, if needed.

H4A seminar agenda: This seminar will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction & overview: What defines “girl/woman”: biological “sex” and sociocultural “gender” 
  • The leading causes of morbidity and mortality for women (primarily U.S.) across the life course
  • Importance of lifestyle (e.g., diet, exercise, weight control), including eating disorders
  • Life stages and reproductive phases
    • From birth to puberty
    • Special reproductive (e.g., gynecologic and obstetric) health issues
      • Contraception and family planning
      • Pregnancy
      • Labor and delivery, postpartum, breastfeeding
      • Assisted reproductive technology
    • Menopause and hormone therapy
    • Postmenopausal aging and specific health issues in older women
  • Mental health & illness
  • Violence against women, U.S. and globally
  • Sexual health & sexual positivity
  • Why sex & gender are Important in precision health of women
    • Autoimmune diseases
    • Sex differences in drug metabolism and medical management.

 

What will you learn: In this seminar, participants will learn about current topics and controversies in the field of women’s health (focus is primarily on the U.S., with selected global women’s health topics). Participants will learn about the major preventable causes of morbidity and mortality (i.e., modifiable risk factors) for women and key reproductive, sexual, and lifestyle issues that matter for women’s health across the life course. This seminar will also explore the latest research on what makes a “woman” - from puberty through old age.  

Who should attend: Anyone who is interested in learning about women’s health issues and controversies. Seminar will be useful to those wanting to keep abreast of the latest research in the field of women’s health as well as those who want to better understand how women’s health research may apply to their and their family’s day-to-day lives.

Seminar content will be accessible and relevant to:

  • Those working in non-profit community organizations, government agencies, and other sectors
  • High school and college students
  • Researchers and scholars working in the field of women’s health and related disciplines.

 

Cost: Full-Day Seminar Rates:

  • Seminars are Stanford STAP eligible.
  • Early Bird Rate = $500 USD (through July 30)
  • Scholarship Rate  = $500 USD (includes students, trainees, H4A alumni, Stanford employees (STAP eligible), SHPN members, URMs, government agencies, and non-profit community partners)
  • Regular Rate = $750 USD
