H4A Seminar: The Science of Healthy Living

Date & Time: Monday, August 8, 2016: 9am-5:30pm (with breaks for coffee/snacks and lunch)

Schedule: Seminar runs from 9am-5.30pm. Includes a morning break from 11-11:15am, lunch from 12:15-1:15pm, and an afternoon break from 3:15-3:30pm. The seminar presenters for the day may need to adjust these times, if needed.

H4A seminar agenda: This seminar will cover the following topics:

  • Overview of chronic disease epidemiology (e.g., leading causes of disease (morbidity) & death (mortality)) in the U.S. by age and gender
    • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke, etc.)
    • Cancer (lung, breast & prostate, colorectal, skin, etc.)
    • Special health issues of children, adolescents, and young adults
    • Other health issues for middle-aged & older adults   
  • Preventable causes (risk factors) of chronic disease and social determinants of health
  • National recommendations for a healthy lifestyle
    • The public health campaign against smoking
    • Obesity-related comorbidities and weight control (including body composition, e.g., muscle, fat, bone)
    • Sedentary lifestyle and physical activity (PA) recommendations: 24-hour activity cycle: moderate- & vigorous- (MVPA); light-intensity PA, sleep
    • Diet and nutrition for chronic disease prevention
    • Mental health, stress reduction, sleep, hygiene
  • The prevention focus of the Affordable Care Act; the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and other health screening guidelines
  • Successful aging across the life course.

 

What will you learn: In this seminar, participants will be introduced to the science of healthy living (focus will be on U.S. health). Participants will learn about the major preventable causes of morbidity & mortality (i.e., modifiable risk factors) and national lifestyle recommendations and national recommendations (behavioral change guidelines) for reducing chronic disease risk. A life course perspective is presented as a trajectory from conception and childhood to young, middle-aged and older adults - with recognition of the importance of social determinants of health. Sex & gender differences are also presented.

Who should attend: This seminar is designed for anyone who wonders:

  • How can I access a crash course (or refresher) on the science and recommendations for healthy living (physical activity, diet/nutrition, sleep, etc.) and chronic disease prevention in the U.S.?
  • How can I distinguish real health research from what I hear on TV and read on the internet?
  • I want to get and/or stay healthy - what basics do I need to know?

 

Seminar content will be accessible and relevant to:

  • Interested community members
  • Those working in non-profit community organizations, government agencies, and other sectors
  • High school and college students
  • Researchers and scholars working in public health, chronic disease epidemiology, and other related fields/disciplines.

 

Cost: Full-Day Seminar Rates:

  • Seminars are Stanford STAP eligible.
  • Early Bird Rate = $500 USD (through July 30)
  • Scholarship Rate  = $500 USD (includes students, trainees, H4A alumni, Stanford employees (STAP eligible), SHPN members, URMs, government agencies, and non-profit community partners)
  • Regular Rate = $750 USD
