Bing Overseas Studies
Overview
Every Stanford undergraduate should give serious consideration to studying overseas. Regardless of the academic path you choose, you will be enriched by time spent in another country. Achieving cultural literacy and gaining substantive understanding of other perspectives in the world will deepen your awareness of yourself, your educational goals, and your own society. Nearly one-half of each graduating class studies abroad through one of Stanford's overseas programs.
In an effort to encourage students to study abroad, we have added an extensive list of overseas courses to the STS curriculum, which can be found in our five Concentration Areas at the end of our 2015-16 Requirements and Approved Courses document.
Bing Overseas Studies Programs
STANFORD IN WASHINGTON
The Bing Stanford in Washington (BSIW) Program gives undergraduates an opportunity to study and learn in the nation's capital. Students are individually placed in a substantive internship that enables them to work closely with individuals in Washington's wide range of governmental, non-governmental and cultural organizations. Students also enroll in seminars taught by Stanford faculty and national policy experts. Learn more about the Stanford in Washington Program.
STANFORD IN KYOTO
The Kyoto Program is designed for students with intellectual interests in the complex interplay between Japan’s distinctive blend of ancient and modern culture, the diverse challenges the country faces as a post-industrial nation surrounded by rising regional powers, and the way that Japan continues to innovate in the face of the forces of globalization. The program also helps students understand the professional value of developing linguistic proficiency and cultural competencies that facilitate interaction in the Japanese culture while simultaneously complementing their technical abilities. STANFORD IN SANTIAGO
The objective of the Santiago Program is to introduce students to the richness and diversity of Latin America. It seeks to familiarize students with the nuances of language, artistic expression, political culture, and environment that characterize the region, while also understanding the uniqueness of the nations in this part of the world. It also seeks to show how past and present can coexist, how legacies endure, and how modernity and innovation can thrive in a national context. Learn more about the Stanford in Santiago Program.
STANFORD IN PARIS
“Principles of Biochemistry” is a course that will be taught in English, and will allow STEM students (which now includes STS) who thought that it may never be possible to study abroad to do so. Additionally, the French Language Prerequisite will be waived for winter quarter STEM students enrolling in this course. Exciting on-site internships related to STEM fields are offered year round as well, every quarter. Learn more about the Paris Overseas Program
