Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book

The Zimbra service was retired on December 31, 2015.

Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book come with the Macintosh operating system. If you're using a Mac, they should already on your system. These programs can work together on your Mac to provide an integrated email and calendar experience similar to that in Webmail. The documents linked below are designed to help you use the Stanford Email and Calendar service with these Macintosh applications.

Apple Mail

Getting started

Apple Mail can be configured to access your Stanford Email using either the IMAP or POP protocol. Select the IMAP protocol if you want to access the same set of messages and mailboxes from both Apple Mail and Webmail.

See the Email Configuration page for instructions on setting up Apple Mail.

iCal

Getting started

iCal can be configured to access your Stanford Calendar using the CalDAV protocol.

Things to be aware of with using iCal with Stanford Calendar:

  • In order to avoid lengthy sync times, the Stanford Calendar server is set to allow CalDAV connections to sync appointments one month in the past and one year in the future. For access to appointments outside of this range you can use the web client.
  • iCal will automatically display and sync all calendars that appear in the left hand column of the Stanford Calendar web client. If you find iCal is taking too long to sync a large number of calendars, you can remove some shared calendars from your list in the web client and they will no longer appear in iCal.
  • Although you can access shared calendars (i.e., belonging to other users or resources) using iCal it is not recommended that you manage (add and and delete appointments) on a shared calendar.

Address book

Getting started

The Apple Address Book application can sync to  the Stanford Email and Calendar Address Book using the CardDev protocol. There is no access to the Zimbra Global Address List from the Address Book application but you can sync your other Stanford Address Books.
