Limited Submission Programs

This webpage contains an overview of the external limited submission programs (NIH, NSF, foundation and association), programs currently requiring an internal selection process, as well as a calendar of all limited programs offered throughout the year.


What is a limited submission program?
Limited programs are external sponsored research grants that require an internal selection process because the sponsor limits the number of applications that can be submitted by Stanford. The limited submission programs are facilitated by Jeanne Heschele on behalf of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research Office and the School of Medicine Research Management Group (RMG). Natioal Science Foundation (NSF)
NSF 16-513 Scalable Nanomanufacturing
Limited: only ONE application if Stanford is the lead organization.
Amount of funding: $250,000-$375,000 per year x 4 yrs, depending on the scope of the project.
(5-8 awards to be made)
*Note: The same organization may be a collaborative partner in any number of other multi-organization group proposals in which it is not the lead. A proposal involving more than one organization must be submitted as a single proposal in which a single award is requested, with the managing principal investigator from the lead organization and subawards administered by the lead organization to any other participating organizations.

NIH NIEHS Outstanding New Environmental Scientist (ONES) Award (R01) (RFA-ES-15-020)
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Limited: only ONE applicant is permitted
Amount of funding: for most applications, the budget for direct costs should be limited to $250,000 per year, plus the portion of the additional $250,000 budget for career enhancement which will be distributed over a 5-year award period. ( 5-6 to be awarded)
Eligibility: Stanford assistant professors with PI eligibility (UTL, MCL, or NTL-Research appointments)
The research focus is on exposure -health related responses from environmental agents within the mission interest of the NIEHS. Environmental agents which are considered of primary interest for NIEHS include: industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, and bacterial or biologically derived toxins.
Applicants must have demonstrated outstanding abilities in basic, clinical or population-based research. Individuals must have established research independence from a mentor, and have dedicated, independent laboratory space or access to the clinical, population-based and/or public health research resources which will allow them to conduct the research proposed in the grant application as the lead, independent PD/PI.
Not eligible: CE faculty, Clinical Instructors, Instructors, Academic Staff-research

The Pac-12 Student-Athelete Health and Well-Being Grant Program
# of applicants: Each Pac-­12 institution will be limited to 3 submissions (see the internal submission guidelines below)
The aim of research projects should be to improve the health, general well-­-being, and safety of student atheletes at all Pac-­-12 member institutions. See the guidelines for the topics.
Eligibility: Stanford faculty with PI eligibility (with UTL, MCL, and NTL-Research appointments)

August Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Trust Awards Program Catalyst Award $400,000 for one year Eligibility: Stanford faculty with PI eligibility (see additional criteria) Purpose: to support high-risk, high-reward projects that address critical scientific and therapeutic roadblocks. If successful, these projects will open new avenues for treating and curing disease (see research focus section below). The School of Medicine will facilitate the university-wide internal selection process for this program. Limited: only TWO applicants are permitted. Francis Fellowship Program Limited to TWO applicants per department $156,000 total costs over 3 yrs Eligibillity: Stanford early assistant professors with PI eligibility, academic staff-research (research associates, senior research scientists, senior research scholars), Instructors and postdoctoral fellows involved in pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine.. Clinical or basic science departments are suitable; however, it is expected that the proposed research will focus on lung biology or lung disease. There is no limit to the number of internal proposals a department may submit. A mentor may only sponsor one application annually but may sponsor than one internal proposal for this internal selection process.
