Music Across Campus

A Cappella Groups

Archive of Recorded Sound

The Archive of Recorded Sound's collection contains over 400,000 items that span sound recording history--from its beginnings to the present day. Nearly all formats ever developed to record sound are represented: wax cylinders; shellac, acetate, aluminum, and vinyl discs; magnetic wire and tape recordings; compact discs. Collections are particularly strong in the areas of jazz and opera.

Continuing Studies

Continuing Studies welcomes all adult members of the community—working, retired, or somewhere in between. Take music courses for pleasure, personal enrichment, or professional development.

Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford

Mariachi Cardenal was founded in Casa Zapata during the 1994-1995 school year by students of Stanford University. From humble beginnings of a few members, it has grown to over 15 members and become and integral part of the Chicano community at Stanford. The members come from different musical backgrounds but have come together with guidance from professional mariachis from the Bay Area and have evolved into a successful ensemble.

Music Library

The Music Library provides research support for all aspects of music scholarship. Collections include over 130,000 books and scores, 30,000 sound and video recordings, multiple streaming media databases and other digitized content. Recording collections are greatly enhanced by the Archive of Recorded Sound. Librarians offer instruction on research methods and use of resources. Tours are available year-round.

Stanford Collaborative Orchestra

Founded in 2015, the Stanford Collaborative Orchestra (SCOr) is Stanford’s first student-run, conductorless symphonic ensemble. Committed to applying a democratic model of collaborative leadership to the orchestral setting, and by tapping into the full creative potential of every musician, they engage in a novel process of music-making to deliver dynamic performances as “an orchestra of the students, by the students, for the students.”

Stanford Light Opera Company

The Stanford Light Opera Company (SLOCo) is Stanford’s premier light opera theatre company, tracing its history back to the original Stanford Savoyards, a Gilbert and Sullivan performance society founded in 1973. SLOCo maintains a strong presence in the student theater community with its own student-run mainstage productions, coupled with a renewed mission in fostering student communities passionate about operatic performance, musicianship, and technical theater. SLOCo aims to produce quality light opera for the Stanford community and leverage its diverse backgrounds and talents to collaborate with other student theater groups and ignite interest in opera and theater.
