Formal Review Process

A formal approach to a workplace issue could include:

  • Ask your local Human Resources office, or a representative from University Human Resources Employee & Labor Relations, to formally look into your concern. 
  • For faculty, discuss the issue with your Faculty Affairs Officer.
  • You may be able to file a formal Staff Grievance to address your concern.  Links to these procedures are found below.

Regular Non-Academic Staff Procedures

These policies and process apply to regular staff employees after completion of Trial Period:


During a regular staff employee's Trial Period, these policies apply:

  • Trial Period, Administrative Guide Memo 2.1.15
  • If you are involuntarily terminated and have concerns and/or feedback regarding your employment, you may contact the local Human Resources office or University Human Resources Employee & Labor Relations.

Academic Staff Procedures

Academic Staff may wish to consult with your school's Human Resources Manager.

Applicable policies and procedures are set forth below:

  • Libraries: Section IV of the booklet, Personnel Program, Academic Staff-Libraries (January 1, 1989), available from the Library Human Resources Office in Green Library.
  • Research: Chapter 10.2 of the Research Policy Handbook: Grievance Procedure: Academic Staff.
  • Teaching: Chapter 8 of the Faculty Handbook: Academic Staff-Teaching: Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Artists-in-Residence: Core Policy Statements.

Faculty Procedures

Faculty members may wish to speak with their Chair, Associate Dean, Dean or others in the school who have a role related to resolving workplace issues. The Faculty Affairs Office in the Provost's Office is your resource; you may also wish to consult the Faculty Handbook to review any applicable policies.

Bargaining Unit Staff Procedures

If you are a staff member in a bargaining unit job, the grievance procedures are addressed in the current collective bargaining contract. Visit Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining.

Temporary and Casual Employees

If you are involuntarily terminated and have concerns and/or feedback regarding your employment, you may contact the local Human Resources office or University Human Resources Employee & Labor Relations.
