1098-T Tax Overview and FAQs

Main content start

The 1098-T is a tuition statement (unlike the W-2, which is an income statement). The 1098-T reports the amount paid toward qualified tuition and related expenses during a given calendar year. It also reflects the total amount of scholarships, fellowships and/or grants that have been credited to your student financial account during that year.

The primary purpose of the 1098-T is to help determine a student’s eligibility to claim an education tax credit. The two education tax credits are the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit. Please find eligibility details and guidelines in IRS Publication 970.
