Stampede Kills 26 at Timbuktu Mosque

A stampede at a historic mosque in Mali has killed at least 26 people and left more than 40 injured.

Officials and witnesses said a large crowd was heading to pray at the main Djingareyber mosque in the desert city of Timbuktu when it encountered road blocks from construction work.

The stampede broke out when too many people packed into a narrow alley to bypass the barricaded route.

The crowds were celebrating the Muslim holiday of Maouloud, marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
