Site Access

SLAC has proximity card readers at all entrances and internal gates. Please review Gate Hours & Services and important changes to user badging and access:

BEFORE TRAVELING TO SLAC, inform your colleagues about access changes. Ensure all experimenters are listed on proposals & beam time/support requests and complete the following steps:

1. Register through the user portal to provide or update contact information.

2. Contact URA for additional requirements for users from certain countries.

3. Ensure that you have an appropriate business visa (e.g., B1 or VWP Business, WB, not B2/VWP Tourist, WT).

4. Review updated LCLS and SSRL user arrival & check-in procedures.

5. Complete all training (including Traffic Safety Course 154).

6. Stop at the Security Office Building 235 to obtain a new ID badge and/or proximity access. Bring identification to verify citizenship.

7. Prior to entering the experimental area or starting any experiments, check in with User Check-In Coordinator Jackie Kerlegan in the URA office in Building 120, Room 211 (Monday-Friday from 7 am - 12 noon and 1- 4 pm (except holidays).

8. Contact the URA team to answer questions or provide assistance (650-926-2079/4738/2087/8758/3191).

Computer Accounts & Access

Obtaining a SLAC computer account and accessing LCLS experiment elogs to participate in proposal data collection and analysis is a multi-step process. See instructions to establish a computer account, tips for troubleshooting prolems, and information on setting up or accessing electronic logbooks (eLog on the PCSD Web Portal).

Visitor Maps

The SLAC campus is located on 426 acres of Stanford University property, just three miles west of the university campus. The main entrance to the facility is on Sand Hill Road, just east of Interstate 280. See Visiting SLAC for various maps and directions.

Local Public Transportation

SLAC and Stanford can be reached by a variety of transportation options. There are many resources to help you plan your trip to and around SLAC and Stanford. The free Marguerite shuttle links SLAC with the Stanford main campus, transit hubs and the surrounding community.

Bicycling

LCLS does provide short-term bicycle loans to be used only on-site. Please speak with the Floor Coordinator on-duty in the Near Experimental Hall (B950) for more information.

Bicycle rentals and programs are also available through Bicycling at Stanford program.

Work Safely

Be aware and exercise caution when visiting SLAC, particularly during construction. Contact Security if help is needed or to report any problems or suspicious activity: 650-926-2551. For EMERGENCIES, CALL 911 OR 5555.Insert>

Food Options

The SLAC Cafe, auditorium and visitor center are closed until construction is completed on the new Science and User Support Building (SUSB) in 2015.  FOOD OPTIONS at SLAC include Starbucks or the EAT Club (pre-order lunch for delivery ~noon to the Arrillaga Recreation Center at SLAC (ARCAS). A few restaurants deliver to SLAC Main Gate/Guest House or offer discounts.

  • Lutticken's - Located at 3535 Alameda de las Pulgas in Menlo Park. Offers a free fountain drink and refills with the purchase of a sandwich when you show your badge.
  • Eric's Gourmet Deli - Located at 325 Sharon Park Drive in Menlo Park. Offers a discount through their "frequent buyer" program. Ask for a frequent buyer sandwich card and show your badge when buying a sandwich to get two stamps instead of the usual single stamp. After five purchases, you'll get a free sandwich. Frequent buyer cards are also available at SLAC's security badging office in Building 235.
  • Portola Kitchen - Located at 3130 Alpine Road in Portola Valley. Offers a 10% discount when you show your badge.

Gym and Recreation

The Arrillaga Recreation Center at SLAC is a 17,600-square-foot facility on 7.5-acre recreation grounds available to the laboratory's employees and visiting scientists at all hours. Please make sure to stop by during staffed hours, Monday-Friday 7AM-7PM, to complete your waiver form for 24/7 key card access.
