Healthy at Any Age

Stanford offers only medical and dental coverage in retirement. Your university contribution toward the cost of your benefits will be based on when you meet the age and service requirements for retirement (see Eligibility).

Retiree Medical Benefits and Medicare

Your medical options depend on your Medicare eligibility.

Medical Plans

Retirees under age 65 can enroll in the same plans available to active employees. For retirees age 65 and over, Stanford offers two types of medical plans: Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage.

With Medicare Supplement plans you apply for benefits after you receive your Medicare payments. With Medicare Advantage plans you sign-over your Medicare benefits to an HMO and receive all of your care through the HMO.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Each of the medical plans includes coverage for mental health and substance abuse.

Dental Plan

Stanford offers dental coverage to qualifying official retirees.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Additional coverage for long-term care services such as nursing and home care for retirees.
