Family Additions & Changes

When you welcome a new child into the family, or a child becomes ineligible for coverage, you can change certain benefits without waiting until the next Open Enrollment period. Find out what changes you can make when you change your dependent coverage. Logon to MyBenefits in the upper right corner of this page, then click on My Benefits Elections > Change Coverage to explore or report a new Life Event. When you add a dependent to your coverage we will ask you to submit proof of eligibilityDependent Eligibility Documentation Requirements

Some family life events include:

  • Birth, adoption, placement for adoption or legal custody of a child
  • Change in your child care costs or provider
  • Child graduates or is no longer a full-time student
  • Dependent no longer qualifies for coverage
  • Dependent becomes qualified for coverage

Dependent Coverage Begins

A child becomes eligible at birth, adoption or when you gain custody. Generally, a child is covered until age 26.

What To Do When You Have A Child

  • Log on to MyBenefits in the upper right corner of this page within 31 days of the event to add your child to your coverage.
  • Make sure you have the document(s) you needDependent Eligibility Documentation Requirements

    to verify their eligibility when we ask you for them.
  • Adjust your life and AD&D insurance, or purchase dependent life insurance.
  • Verify or change your beneficiary information for your life and AD&D insurance. Logon to MyBenefits in the upper right corner of this page and look under My Personal Information. If you need change your beneficiary for your Stanford retirement savings plan, download the form and follow the instructions.
  • Start a Dependent Day Care Spending Account or increase amount of your election.

Dependent Coverage Ends

A child may no longer be eligible, and loses coverage, when the following life events happen:

  • Child turns 26
  • Death of a child
  • Divorce/dissolution of partnership affecting stepchildren/children of partner

COBRA

When your child is no longer eligible, coverage will end for your child. Coverage under some plans may be continued through COBRA for up to 36 months. See more on COBRA.

What To Do When Your Dependent Is No Longer Eligible

  • Log on to MyBenefits in the upper right corner of this page within 31 days of the date eligibility ends to drop your dependent from your coverage.
  • Adjust your life and AD&D insurance amounts.
  • Verify or change your beneficiary information for your life and AD&D insurance. Logon to MyBenefits in the upper right corner of this page and look under My Personal Information. If you need change your beneficiary for your Stanford retirement savings plan, download the form and follow the instructions.
  • In the event of a death, contact Stanford Benefits be sure to get several certified copies of the death certificate.
