Partners in Early Detection
The Canary Center at Stanford works closely with the Canary Foundation, a non-profit focused on fundraising for early cancer detection research. However, the Canary Center at Stanford and the Canary Foundation are distinct organizations.
The Canary Center is a research center comprised of Stanford Faculty and scientists who are focused on early detection research programs. The faculty, staff and students at the Canary Center at Stanford conduct independent research projects and also participate on Canary Foundation science teams. The Canary Center at Stanford is led by Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, the Chair of the Radiology department and Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor of Cancer Research.
The Canary Foundation supports a network of early cancer detection projects across the country with faculty from multiple institutions working together to solve a complex problem in cancer early detection. The Canary Foundation funds projects at multiple sites such as the Prostate Active Surveillance Study, coordinated at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and including 12 enrollment sites. The Canary Foundation has selected Stanford as a center of excellence for early detection research and has played a pivotal role in funding the creation of the Canary Center at Stanford.
