Financial Assistance for MS Candidates

Research Assistantships

Eligibility

Research Assistantships (RAs) are available to Stanford students, both international and domestic. RA positions are typically appointed to current Stanford students who have completed at least one (1) quarter of study at Stanford. On rare occasions, an incoming student may be awarded an RA appointment during the first quarter of study at Stanford.

How to Apply

There is no application process for RA positions. Research Assistantships are awarded by individual faculty members who have the necessary research funding. In most cases, students who have successfully arranged for an RA appointment have secured it by contacting a faculty member directly.

Research Assistantship Details

Research assistants typically receive 8-10 units of tuition coverage and a monthly salary in exchange for 20 hours of work per week.

Students must have a Social Security Number and an I-9 Eligibility to Work form on file with Stanford’s Payroll department before beginning an assistantship appointment.

For information regarding Stanford’s policies on assistantships, please refer to Stanford’s Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures Handbook (GAP 7.3)

For information on taxation of assistantships and tax treaties, please refer to the Tax Information page on Stanford’s Financial Services website.

Teaching Assistantships

Eligibility

Teaching Assistantships (TAs) are available to all Stanford students, both international and domestic, who have been at Stanford for at least one (1) quarter. On rare occasions, incoming students may be appointed a Teaching Assistantship during the first quarter of study at Stanford.

How to Apply

Applications for TA positions for Electrical Engineering courses are provided through the Electrical Engineering department. Current students will receive an email each quarter when the online application is available for the upcoming quarter.

Course Assistantship Details

Most Teaching Assistantships provided by the Electrical Engineering department are offered in the form of Course Assistant (CA) positions. CAs assist a faculty member who has primary responsibility for the course.

Course Assistantships typically provide recipients with tuition coverage of 8-10 units and a monthly salary, requiring 20 hours of work per week. More information about Course Assistantships in the Electrical Engineering department can be found in the CA Appointments section.

Students must have a Social Security Number and an I-9 Eligibility to Work form on file with Stanford’s Payroll department before beginning an assistantship appointment.

Student Loans and Other Financial Information

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for need-based loans through Stanford. Information regarding student loans and the application process can be found on Stanford’s Financial Aid Office website. International students are not eligible for student loans through Stanford. However, we do encourage these students to apply for funding from their home country.

Because not all entering EE students secure funding as they begin graduate studies at Stanford, prospective students are encouraged to apply for outside sources of funding. We strongly encourage applicants to apply for fellowships from outside resources such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Defense (DoD), as well as from many other possible sources.
