Message from the Chief

Welcome to the Division of Hematology, a progressive and dynamic center for basic and translational science, clinical research, patient care, and teaching, where clinicians, scholars, investigators, and trainees work together to harness the power and resources of Stanford Medicine in the pursuit of excellence.

The history of the Division dates from the move from San Francisco to the Stanford University Campus in 1959. At that time, the Division consisted of Bill Creger, MD, who provided a strong clinical influence, Stan Schrier, MD, and two remarkable women, Judy Pool and Rose Payne, who were PhD investigators, and arguably made some of the most influential observations in hematology over the next two decades. The Division grew in the mid-1960s, with the
addition of Saul Rosenberg, MD, who subsequently founded the Division of Medical Oncology.

Today, the Division of Hematology is comprised of thirteen full time faculty an instructor, clinical research nurses, clinical trial coordinators, nurse practitioners, nurse coordinators, and support staff. The basic science and clinical studies carried out by hematology faculty cover a broad range of hematologic malignancies and blood disorders. Clinical investigators in the Division utilize discoveries from the laboratories worldwide to develop and test novel therapeutic approaches to improve patient outcomes. The outstanding medical education and mentoring by our faculty has been instrumental in training future leaders in the field of hematology.

We invite you to learn more about our division through our website.
