F-1 Students on Practical Training

F-1 practical training can be recommended by a student's college or university for a position related to the student's field of study (as indicated on their I-20 visa document). If the student is participating in Post-Completion Practical training (after they graduate) or Pre-Completion Practical Training, approval from USCIS is required in the form of an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Otherwise, if the student is participating in Curricular Practical Training prior to graduation, authorization is granted by the college or university on their I-20 visa document.

The maximum period allowable is 12 months, in some cases 29 months, nonrenewable. F-1 practical training may be authorized for summer employment, upon completion of study or occasionaly during a course of study.

Stanford is an e-verify employer and departments therefore may provide Stanford’s e-verify number to F-1 scholars seeking STEM extensions on OPT for employment at Stanford.
