Program Transfers

Please note: The information on this page is intended only for Stanford J-1 Scholars and Visiting Student Researchers. If you are a J-1 student enrolled in a Stanford degree program, please visit our section for International Students found in the navigation bar on the left.

Transferring to Stanford

You will need to ask your target Stanford department to request a DS-2019 for you to transfer program sponsorship. You will need to provide your prospective Stanford department with:

  • a clear, clean copy of your current DS-2019 form and all prior issuances
  • your I-94 card
  • contact information of your current responsible officer (name, phone number and email address)

The I-Center will create your Stanford DS-2019 shortly after the agreed upon transfer date and notify your department when it's ready to be picked up.

Transferring from Stanford to another Institution/Sponsor

Please make sure your Stanford department is aware of your proposed transfer.  The transfer must be done prior to the program end date on your current DS-2019 and can only be done after the I-Center receives a request for your transfer from the new institution.

Once your department is aware of your transfer, please ask the international office at your new institution to make a transfer request by sending an email to internationalscholars@stanford.edu.  The transfer request should include the following information:

  • Name
  • SEVIS number
  • J program number of the institution
  • Requested transfer effective date
  • Verification that you will be transferring to continue research according to your original program objectives and in the same J-1 category (Research Scholar or Short Term Scholar).
