Professor and Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Yvonne (Bonnie) A. Maldonado, MD, is Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity and Professor and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Maldonado attended Stanford University School of Medicine, completed a residency program at the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins and received postgraduate training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University.

Shaila Kotadia, PhD

Director, Culture and Inclusion

Shaila Kotadia, Ph.D., is the Director of Culture and Inclusion for the School of Medicine where she focuses on the integration of diversity and inclusion activities across all constituencies from students through faculty and implements school-wide diversity and inclusion strategy and planning. Dr. Kotadia received her undergraduate degree in Cell and Structural Biology with minors in Geography and Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign followed by a Ph.D. in Genetics and Development from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her postdoctoral work at the University of California, Santa Cruz focused on cell division and chromosome segregation. Prior to starting at Stanford, Dr. Kotadia led the STEM Equity & Inclusion Initiative at the University of California, Berkeley where she conducted an institutional assessment of STEM diversity programs and advanced partnerships in equity, inclusion, and diversity to ensure student and research success in STEM academic units.


Kathleen Victor

Administrative Associate

Kathleen is a Silicon Valley native with over 25 years of combined experience in office management, finance, small business management and customer service with an additional 7 years experience in the insurance industry as an administrative assistant and insurance claims investigator. She has an associate degree in Science with a background in biology and medical front office practices and procedures. She joined Stanford in 2014 as program coordinator for the Big Data initiative before joining OFDD in 2015.


Carly Matuszak

Financial Manager

Carly Matuszak provides financial support to the OFDD team, which includes coordinating the annual budget process and assisting in day-to-day financial inquiries. She graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Accounting and has worked as a finance professional in many industries of Silicon Valley.


Jonathan Altamirano, MS

Research Assistant

Jonathan received his BA in Human Biology and MS in Biology from Stanford University. He’s originally from Houston, TX and is a native Spanish speaker. He works as a research assistant in both Stanford Medicine’s Global Child Health Program as well as the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity, where his role includes database management and statistical analysis. Following his research assistantships, he hopes to attend medical school.


Luis Garcia

Research Assistant

Luis is an undergraduate and coterminal Master's student at Stanford studying Human Biology and Community Health and Prevention Research. Through his involvement at Arbor Free Clinic, Stanford Health Advocacy and Research in the Emergency Department, the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program, and the Leland Scholars Program, he has developed a passion for health and educational equity. In the future, Luis hopes to attend medical school and complement his medical education with his interest in diversity and inclusion to better serve historically marginalized populations. 


Brenda Flores

Research & Program Officer

Brenda obtained her BA in Psychology alongside a minor in Chinese from Stanford University. During her time as an undergraduate, she was heavily involved in Barrio Assistance: a tutoring program for elementary and middle school students from underserved communities. The program sought to create a welcoming learning environment for students of all backgrounds, and she now uses the skills she cultivated during the program in her position in the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity (OFDD). As a Research and Program Officer, she performs research and helps implement programs related to diversity, inclusion, and faculty professional development. Brenda hopes to attend graduate school in the future.


Robert Victor

Research & Program Officer

Robert obtained his BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UC Santa Cruz and spent much of his free time as an undergraduate assisting in genetics research and university event planning. Through his time spent volunteering in medical clinics, both within the United States and abroad, he developed a passion for promoting increased access to quality healthcare that is inclusive to all. As a Program and Research Officer for the OFDD, Robert strives to strengthen Stanford’s medical community through the implementation of diversity and leadership initiatives. Robert hopes to attend medical school in the future, with the goal of potentially pursuing medical genetics or surgical oncology as a specialty.


Michaela Kiernan, PhD

OFDD R01 Workshop Instructor

Michaela Kiernan, PhD, is a Senior Research Scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center.  She is the Principal Investigator of NIH R01-funded grants examining the efficacy of behavioral obesity interventions and has expertise in clinical and community research methods and statistics. Dr. Kiernan has taught grant writing workshops for OFDD for ten years, mentored minority faculty fellows for six years at the School of Medicine Center of Excellence, and been awarded multiple Stanford divisional teaching and mentorship awards.
