The Successful K Award Application: A Reviewers Perspective
The K08 and K23 career development awards support mentored lab-based or patient-oriented research designed to foster the career development of young clinical investigators. They help transition from junior faculty to independent research-based academic positions. In 2013, the K award success rates were 25-35% across all institutes. Funding opportunities are often missed due to poor understanding of what is available and how the award can be secured.
In this workshop, held over two days for two hours each day, Dr. Laure Aurelian discusses the different K award programs, and how to develop the best match for you. She will explain the reviewers’ expectations and the most common misconceptions and provide an overview of the strategies to be used in order to write a competitive proposal.

Laure Aurelian, PhD
Senior advisor for faculty development at Stanford University and Professor of Pharmacology and Microbiology at the University of Maryland Medical School. Her research interests are focused on virology, immunology and cellular and molecular biology, with emphasis on cancer and neuroscience. She received her first R01 award in 1970 and has since been continuously supported by NIH grants. She is the author of 300 publications in outstanding peer-reviewed journals and numerous review articles and book chapters. She is the inventor on 14 U.S. and foreign patents. She has trained over 50 students and post-doctoral fellows most of whom have achieved independent academic careers.
Dr. Aurelian has served on standing study sections that review R01, PO1 and K award applications and is still functioning as a reviewer for NIH grants. At the University of Maryland, she works with investigators in developing grant proposals and programmatic initiatives, and educates faculty in grant and manuscript writing skills.
