WINTER QUARTER 2016

For Intermediate & Advanced Students


CLASSES BEGIN: Monday, January 4th and end Thursday,March 10th 2016.

No classes will be held on January 18th - Martin Luther King Day and February 15th - Presidents' Day

 

All classes meet in the English Classroom at Bechtel I-Center unless otherwise noted*.


  • No Beginners, please. Classes are open to Stanford students, post-doctoral scholars, and their family members.
  • Classes are informal. Please arrange childcare for babies.
  • Register for the program in the first class. To attend, simply go to a class at the indicated start time.  PLEASE BE ON TIME.
  • There is no tuition charge. Students may take more than one class.
  • Questions about the classes below may be referred to Mary Ann Saunders at 650-854-2840.

  • Beginning students should contact Adult Education programs. Classes are free of charge. For Adult Education information, call 329-3752 in Palo Alto ; in Menlo Park, Redwood City or Atherton, call Sequoia Adult Ed at 306-8866; in Mountain View, call 940-1333.

MONDAYS:

I. LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH AMERICAN HISTORY –Students will practice listening, speaking and vocabulary skills by examining key events in America's history

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM– AMY SIMS- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM

II. CALIFORNIA TRAVEL AND HISTORYFind out about the places to visit for a weekend getaway or a great vacation as well as learn about the history of the location.

10:40 AM – 12:15 PM– BOB JONES - - ENGLISH CLASSROOM

III. PRACTICAL ENGLISH FOR DAILY LIVINGLearn how to express yourself clearly and confidently when going shopping, eating out, making phone calls etc,

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM–PATTY BUCHANAN - - ASSEMBLY ROOM

TUESDAYS:

IV. AMERICAN LIFE AND HUMORDiscuss current issues and lifestyles, view videos, and compare U.S. humor with humor in your country. Have fun while learning English!

9:00 AM - 10:30AM– TOM & STEFFI BUCH- - ASSEMBLY ROOM

V. AMERICAN IDIOMS AND ISSUES–Presentation and practice of common idioms: reading, writing, pronunciation skills and discussion compose the class activities. Fee for materials

10:40 AM – 12:15 PM– MARY ANN SAUNDERS- -ENGLISH CLASSROOM

VI. INTRODUCTION TO THE AMERICAN SHORT STORY–Read-aloud stories taught in U.S. schools; improve your vocabulary & discussion skills. A small materials fee will be collected in class.

WEDNESDAYS:

V!!. COMMUNICATING ACROSS CULTURESDiscuss differences in national cultures to better understand how these differences influence everyday communication.

9:00 AM - 10:30AM– STEFFI BUCH- -ENGLISH CLASSROOM  

VIII.  INTENSIVE ORAL ENGLISH –Improve your pronunciation and vocabulary skills through speeches in class. Homework is required. There is a $5 syllabus fee. Limit: 20 students.    

10:40 AM – 12:30 PM  – CAROLYN KENDALL- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM

IX.  EXPRESS YOURSELF –Are there situations you find yourself in and you don't know what to say or how to say it? Learn and practice how to expess yourself with confidence.

X.  AMERICAN CUSTOMS AND INSTITUTIONS– A survey of American cultures and traditions.

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM   – KAREN SORTINO- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM

XI.  MEDIA AND THE U.S. CULTURE – Learn how media, electronic and print, affects U.S. culture followed by group discussion.

10:40 AM– 12:15 PM  –MARY PAT GASPICH- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM  

XII.  BUSINESS WORKSHOP -Discuss business issues and solve genuine business problems while role playing as management consultants. No business experience necessary. Limit: 20 students.

1:30 PM– 3:30 PM  –ED LOIZEAUX- - ENGLISH CLASSROOM
