Stanford Students Going Abroad

GENDER, RACE, DISABILITY & SEXUAL ORIENTATION

For women, students of color, LGBT students and students with disabilities, there are additional factors to prepare for when traveling abroad. It is essential to research your destination country individually to see what customs exist and attitudes prevail as it can be an issue of health and safety.

The starting point can be:

U.S. Department of State’s section for women, LGBT and disabled student travelers

Center for Global Education

Some travel books and travel websites will cover these issues in depth:

NAFSA Rainbow Special Interest Group

Gay and Lesbian Travel Resource Guide

"Identity: Sexual and Gender Expression Abroad"

For women travelers: Journey Woman

For disabled travelers: Mobility International USA

For issues confronting transgender travelers: Transequality
