Overview
Living in a co-op is very different from living in a residence hall or other University-operated residence. Co-op members, who live in various-sized bedrooms from singles to quints, jointly plan the purchasing of food and supplies, budgeting of finances, and coordination of jobs. Residents usually spend from 2 to 6 hours per week doing house jobs, including cooking, washing dishes, and cleaning bathrooms and other common areas. Typically, students must also participate in a “Work Week” prior to the beginning of Autumn Quarter, during which houses are cleaned and readied for the opening of school. By sharing in house activities, residents often feel that a co-op is more like a home than other traditional student residences. For more detailed information on co-ops, such as pre-assignment information, their vision and purpose, see Residential Education’s co-op pages.
Co-Op Housing Assignments
Students are assigned to Co-Ops through the pre-assignment process and the regular housing draw. All students who live in a co-op must agree to the terms and conditions of living in the house when they apply. Co-Ops are self-governing houses and many determine their own independent room assignment process. Some of the co-op houses operate by consensus and determine their room assignments accordingly. Because these room assignments are made under the governance of the house, these houses often have some co-ed living arrangements that may or may not adhere to the gender-neutral housing policies. The University does not forbid mixed gender assignments in coops, but no student will be assigned to a mixed gender room against his or her wishes. For more information on co-ops or on consensus room assignments, contact the House Managers of the individual Co-ops.

Students living in Row Houses (Upper Row, Lower Row, Clusters 1, 2, or 3/Cowell) are strongly encouraged to follow the directions for the mail and package process provided on the Mail Delivery and Shipping page, as the PO Box address is each student’s official Stanford address and should be maintained during their entire undergraduate career. However, Row residents are also able to have mail packages delivered directly to the Row Houses by addressing mail and packages to the houses street address. Please be reminded that Student Housing/the university accepts no responsibility for packages sent/delivered at individual residences. |

Dining Service |
Student-managed meal service: Residents and nonresident eating associates manage the house meal service and prepare all meals themselves. Eating associates at co-ops are required to work 2 - 5 hours per week planning, preparing, and serving meals. Because students prepare all meals, co-op board plans cost less than other meal plans at Stanford. For information on a house’s board plan or becoming an eating associate, speak to the house’s kitchen manager. |

*Important Assignment Information Residential Education is offering a pre-assignment system for all Special Program Houses (Ethnic/Academic Theme, Focus and Cooperative Houses). This process will allow Resident Fellows, Faculty Affiliates, and house program staff to pre-assign a set number of residents who complete the pre-assignment application and meet all necessary requirements prior to the Housing Draw. Here is the Residential Education link for detailed pre-assignment information. There are TWO ways to get in to Co-Op Houses: pre-assignment or through the Draw. Please see the Theme and Focus House page for details. |
