Learn about the Air District’s Asbestos Demolition/Renovation Program and find notification forms, answers to frequently asked questions, compliance tips, and more.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral often used in building materials and construction. Because asbestos has been proven to cause serious and fatal diseases, it is strictly regulated in its use as a building material and where it occurs naturally.
Asbestos Demolition/Renovation Program
The Air District regulates(59 k PDF, 16 pgs) the demolition and renovation of buildings and structures that may contain asbestos, and the manufacture of materials known to contain asbestos.
The Air District must be notified at least 10 business days before:
- Any renovation involving the removal of 100 sq. ft. or more, 100 linear ft. or more, or 35 cubic feet or more of asbestos.
- Every demolition regardless of asbestos content.
For residential buildings of four or fewer dwelling units, you may notify the Air District 72 hours in advance with the payment of an additional fee.
Air District regulations must always be followed when removing asbestos or demolishing buildings.
Payments
The Air District now accepts payments for asbestos renovation and demolition fees online. Credit card forms will no longer be accepted for asbestos fees. Online payments can also now be accepted for open burn fees. Payments can be made with a major credit card, debit or pre-paid debit card, including MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.
Note: You must still send in your asbestos renovation or demolition notification form by fax to (415-749-4658) or by mail to the District office (939 Ellis St, San Francisco, CA 94109, ATT: Asbestos Technicians).
