Mirrielees is an apartment residence for upperclass undergraduate students.

Mirrielees was built in 1972, originally as part of the nearby Escondido Village graduate community. Each furnished apartment has a small living-dining area, a kitchen and bathroom. Mirrielees houses approximately 344 students.

Mirrielees is an enjoyable community, offering independence and privacy. With an involved residence staff— there is plenty of support.

Edith Ronald Mirrielees (1879-1962) is the namesake for Mirrielees House. Edith earned her bachelor’s degree at Stanford in January 1907. As a student, she was editor of the literary magazine Sequoia, an associate editor of the Stanford Quad yearbook, and co-founder of the women’s honorary society, Cap and Gown. She joined the English Department in 1909 as an instructor in writing, rose through the ranks to full professor, and retired in 1944. In addition to teaching she was a prolific writer and in 1959 published Stanford: The Story of a University. Professor Mirrielees instructed, mentored, and became friends with John Steinbeck, and he wrote the introduction to the final edition of her classic book on writing.
