As associate vice provost for inclusion, community and integrative learning, Emelyn leads the Centers for Equity, Community and Leadership, Office of Student Engagement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, BEAM Career Education, the Office for Inclusion, Belonging and Intergroup Communication, and the First-Generation and/or Low-Income Office.
Previously, Emelyn was Dean of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, she served as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Student Life for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Harvard College, and the Campus Diversity Officer and Director of The Women’s Center for the University of California, San Diego.
Emelyn will provide leadership for our many efforts to support students’ sense of community and belonging, as they prepare for their futures as citizens and professionals. Student Affairs organizations reporting through her will include: the Centers for Equity, Community and Leadership; Student Activities and Leadership; Fraternity and Sorority Life; BEAM Career Education; the diversity education office; the First Generation Low-Income Office; and the Stanford Band.
Emelyn is known for her trusting relationships with students, advocacy for the needs of underrepresented and minoritized students, commitment to fostering learning everywhere students interact, and her deep command of the current scholarship on equity and inclusion. Many who met her during her campus interviews commented on her warmth, candor, approachability, sense of humor, and humility.
Emelyn holds a doctor of education from a joint University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University, and California State University, San Marcos program. She earned a master’s degree in postsecondary educational leadership from San Diego State University, and a bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies from University of California, San Diego.
