On February 28, U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl W. Eikenberry traveled to Helmand to get a first-hand understanding of the situation on the ground. The Ambassador began his visit in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province, for a briefing by the joint U.S.-UK Provincial Reconstruction Team. From Lashkar Gah, Ambassador Eikenberry and Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal traveled to Marjah. In Marjah, they received briefings from the U.S. Marines, under the command of Brigadier General Larry Nicholson, and the U.S. and UK civilians who comprise the District Support Team that is working side-by-side with the Marines and Afghans to support the local government in delivering services to the people of Marjah. During the visit, the Ambassador, Governor and General Nicholson walked the bazaars to hear from the local citizens of Marjah.
