MTC and CTC
Metropolitan Transportation Commission
The
Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. MTC functions as both the regional transportation planning agency — a state designation — and, for federal purposes, as the region's metropolitan planning organization (MPO). As such, it is responsible for regularly updating the Regional Transportation Plan, a comprehensive blueprint for the development of mass transit, highway, airport, seaport, railroad, bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The Commission also screens requests from local agencies for state and federal grants for transportation projects to determine their compatibility with the plan. As such, VTA works very closely with MTC staff and the other bay area counties on a variety of transportation funding, policy and planning issues.
California Transportation Commission
The
California Transportation Commission (CTC) was established in 1978 by Assembly Bill 402 out of a growing concern for a single, unified California transportation policy. The Commission is responsible for the programming and allocating of funds for the construction of highway, passenger rail and transit improvements throughout California. The Commission, also advises and assists the Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and the Legislature in formulating and evaluating state policies and plans for California’s transportation programs. VTA works closely with CTC staff to identify and secure funding for local transportation projects that require state funding.
