Some feedback from previous years' event:

"This event was really great. The speaker was engaging and inspiring, and the conversation with my fellow biosciences students was a lot of fun!"

"Great experience to talk with people in many career stages and types of careers."

"This event is worth it just for the opportunity to network with colleagues about opportunities…I didn't think I'd have that opportunity and I was pleasantly surprised."

"Enjoyed my time relating to students and reconnecting with a couple of former classmates." —Alumnus

"I would definitely recommend the event to others! I had a chance to talk to someone who recently became faculty at Stanford and ask questions about how they knew academia was right for them. It was a wonderful networking opportunity."

Celebrating Future Careers: Celebrate, Connect, Imagine is a special, annual student/alumni event for our fourth year graduate students. Together with fellow alumni, faculty and staff, we will celebrate the knowledge and skills that students have developed over these past four years, provide them with a fun venue to reconnect with their peers and an opportunity to meet and talk with a variety of alumni. Our hope is that students will leave with ideas and connections to help gain a deeper appreciation of their academic accomplishments, see how others have transitioned from their PhD to career, and take steps toward pursuing their career of choice. Casual dress is welcome. We look forward to seeing you there!

Keynote

Joanna L. Mountain, PhD

Joanna L. Mountain, PhD
Senior Director of Research, 23andMe

Joanna joined 23andMe in 2007 as a senior member of the Research Team. She served on the faculties of the Anthropological Sciences and Genetics Departments at Stanford University. Dr. Mountain's professional and research interests include the patterns of genetic etiology across a broad range of human traits, the prehistory underlying human genetic diversity, and the nature of the relationship between genetic diversity and categories of race and ethnicity.

Joanna has been awarded multiple grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and has published over 40 papers in the field of human genetics. She spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching at a community school near the Kenyan coast and continues to be particularly interested in the genetic diversity of Africa. Dr. Mountain earned a PhD in Genetics and a BS in Mathematical Sciences, both from Stanford, and conducted postdoctoral research on human evolutionary genetics at the University of California, Berkeley.
