Diversity & Engagement

Diversity is fundamental to our mission to advance scientific thought, train the next generation of leaders and innovators, and impact the world.

Stanford University and the Biosciences Home Programs work throughout the year to identify and recruit the best students from around the world, to engage them in cutting-edge research, and to promote their academic, personal, and professional development. In the Stanford Biosciences, diversity is vital to the creativity that is required to tackle the world's most important problems.

We believe that a student body that is highly qualified and diverse—in gender, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and work-life experiences—is essential to a deep and transformative educational process.

Stanford Biosciences' representatives attend conferences and campuses across the nation to seek out talented students. We provide application fee waivers as well as full financial support for graduate education to help achieve a diverse student body. At every level, Stanford cultivates a supportive, collegial atmosphere with readily available resources to meet the needs and interests of every student.

The Graduate Programs and Diversity Office encourages you to explore the opportunities and resources that ensure that Stanford Biosciences is continually pushing the boundaries of science and medicine. Our efforts begin with recruiting the world's best researchers and continue every day here on campus thanks to our committed students, faculty, and staff.

Commitment to Diversity

The Stanford University School of Medicine and the Biosciences departments are committed to fostering a diverse community in which all individuals are welcomed, respected, and supported to achieve their full potential. While race and ethnicity are commonly cited in relation to diversity, we recognize that there are many different aspects to your identity, including culture, socioeconomic and educational background, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, life experiences, hobbies, and interests. We value diversity because we believe that interaction with people with unique backgrounds and life experiences allows us to reach a greater level of innovation in education, research, and clinical care.
