Overview

The Confucius China Studies Program Fellowshisp provides generous funding and support to doctoral students focusing on China.  The CCSP fellowships are administered through the Institute of International Education (IIE) and include the following opportunities:

The Research Ph.D. Fellowship, which ranges from six months to two years, and provides funding to U.S.-based students who wish to pursue China-related doctoral research across a broad range of fields in the arts, education, humanities and social sciences.

The Ph.D. in China Fellowship, which ranges from three to four years, and provides funding to students holding master's degrees in a China related field who wish to earn their their Ph.D. at a Chinese institution.

Students from a wide range of academic areas focusing on China are encouraged to apply.

The Award

Fellowship recipients will receive generous support during their time in China.

The award package will include the following:
• 80,000 RMB annual living stipend
• 20,000 RMB annual research stipend
• Insurance
• Chinese university tuition
• Reimbursement for the cost of round-trip, economy class airfare to and from China
• Coverage of costs associated with a pre-departure orientation at IIE’s central office in New York
• Airfare coverage for a research visit to China by the recipient’s home university advisor (Research Ph.D. Fellowship only.)

Currently, there are 15 participating universities in China. With the exception of Peking University (PKU), the online application for this award constitutes the university application. When applying, you will be asked to indicate your top two choices. Your application for this fellowship will then be sent to the university of your first choice for consideration. Students applying to PKU will be given separate instructions on the application process and requirements.

Eligibility

Research Ph.D. Fellowship eligible candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a U.S. Institution
  • Pursuing research in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences with a focus on China
  • Are not a citizen of the People's Republic of China
  • Will not be recipients of other Chinese government scholarship funding
  • Will not have spent a significant amount of time in the People's Republic of China during the years of their secondary education
  • HSK test scores are recommended component but not a formal requirement

Ph.D. in China Fellowship eligible candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed a master's degree, or will have completed a master's degree by the start of the fellowship
  • Are interested in pursuing their doctoral degree in China in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences with a focus on China
  • Are not a citizen of the People's Republic of China
  • Will not be recipients of other Chinese government scholarship funding
  • Will not have spent a significant amount of time in the People's Republic of China during the years of their secondary education
  • Have an HSK test score of 5 or higher, with priority given to applicants with higher scores

The Application

Applications are now being accepted through February 15, 2016 (not postmarked), and candidates will be notified of the results of their application in April 2016, with grants set to begin no earlier than fall 2016.

Students for either fellowship are required to apply for this funding through the IIE website. The following are required to apply:

  • An online application
  • A letter of invitation from your first choice host university in China
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Research proposal related to your Ph.D.
  • Language Evaluation
  • One set of official transcripts from all post-secondary degree granting institutions
  • HSK score report (required for the Ph.D. in China Fellowships, optional for the Research Ph.D. Fellowship)
  • Master's thesis abstract (Ph.D. in China Fellowship applicants only)

As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to indicate their first and second choice from among the Chinese universities participating in this program. Every effort will be made to accommodate your first choice, but we recommend that students be prepared for placement at their second choice institution.
With the exception of Peking University (PKU), the application for this fellowship constitutes the application to the host institution. Applicants to PKU will be given special instructions for completing their application.
