Binding and Finishing

Binding and Finishing is comprised of two units: Bindery Preparation/Receiving and End Processing. Both units process library material for circulation and shelving per internal guidelines for call number generation and placement, binding preparation via ABLE software, quality control of bound volumes, bookplating, property stamping, conservation routing, patron recall searches, and book jacket covering. In addition to these processes, we assist students and staff with theses and dissertation binding orders.

We handle the following materials:

  • Print: monographs, serials, pamphlets, loose pages.
  • Optical media: DVDs, CDs, CD-ROMs, Laser Discs, and video games.
  • Other: conservation enclosures, Microfilm, Microfiche, VHS tapes, and mixed media ephemera.

Binding

Commercial library bindery remains a core preventive preservation tool for Stanford University Libraries’ print collection. Binding and Finishing staff identify incoming general collection materials for binding as part of the regular department processing workflow and send circulating materials for binding as needed.

Reformatting

The department can assist with reformatting services for print materials including scanning for use copies. We scan materials in-house when possible or outsource to commercial library binders for scanning and binding to our specifications. We scan all bound items intact when condition allows.
