Guidelines

The primary purpose of the Stanford University Libraries is to serve the academic and research needs of the faculty, students and staff. Persons not currently members of the Stanford community may use some of the Libraries’ collections and facilities. Visitors must agree to voluntarily yield to the needs of our primary clientele when necessary, particularly when the library is very busy.

Access policies described here apply to Green Library. 

Visitor access and borrowing

Public access

Members of the public can register for seven free day passes (building access only) each year. Day passes are required for entry into some libraries. You can get them at the visitor kiosks at each Green Library entrance. A valid government-issued picture ID (passport, driver's license, etc.) is required.

For access beyond the free day passes, or for borrowing privileges for non-Stanford-affiliated individuals and corporations, we offer a fee-based library membership. Stanford-affiliated groups may qualify for courtesy access and borrowing privileges.

Alumni access

Stanford alumni qualify for reduced fee-based library membership for additional access and borrowing. Stanford Alumni Association members qualify for seven additional free day passes (with proof of membership).

Are wireless access and public computers available to visitors?

Visitor wireless Internet access is available, but does not provide access to licensed resources. Public computers are available in Green Library near the Information Center.

Will I have access to electronic databases?

Licensed electronic resources are available from computers located in the libraries. However, some databases are restricted to Stanford University faculty, staff, students, and other authorized Stanford-affiliated users.
