Underrepresented Minority Visiting Student Funded Clerkship

Program Description

In partnership with the Stanford Clinical Opportunity for Residency Experience (SCORE)

The funded visiting clerkship program is designed to give students a chance to experience the exceptional training that Stanford Pediatrics has to offer. In addition, it provides Stanford Pediatrics residents and attending faculty a chance to form a close working relationship with each student.

Visiting students will spend four weeks on one of the following: General Pediatrics Wards, Renal/Rheumatology Wards, Pulmonology Wards, Gastroenterology Wards, Hematology/Oncology Wards, NICU, PICU, Cardiology Consults/Clinics, Endocrinology Clinics, or Infectious Disease Consults/Clinics.

As Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) is a tertiary care center, students will have exposure to a variety of patients ranging from bread-and-butter pediatrics to medically complex patients. Students are also invited to attend morning report and noon conference daily, as well as weekly grand rounds.

  1. Each student will be paired with a faculty member that will serve as a mentor and advisor.
  2. Each student will be paired with a resident as a Big Sib
  3. Each student will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the Pediatric Residency Program Director.
  4. Each student will have the option of interviewing at the end of the block (rather than having to return later)

SCORE Program, 2016

I have to say the main reason I was able to take the leap of faith and leave Texas was all because of the SCORE program. I felt so welcomed and supported, I couldn’t help but completely falling in love with this program. The SCORE program exposed me to the diversity that makes up the Stanford residency program. I could tell having people from all over the country from all racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds was very important to this program, and convinced me to leave my home and create a new one at Stanford.

I tremendously enjoyed my clinical experience and received amazing mentorship that I still used throughout my residency training and now. Most of all, I continue to be impressed by Stanford Medicine’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. It has been an honor to be a part of the SCORE family and I look forward to welcoming the next SCORE students!

SCORE Program, 2010

My month at Stanford de-bunked the myth that there were no underserved patients here. Had I not participated in the SCORE program, I may not have chosen Stanford. My SCORE mentors continue to provide valuable mentorship today, and I look forward to continuing to do the same for other SCORE students as they come through the program.
