A Special Municipal Election will be held on August 16, 2016 to fill a vacancy in Councilmember Seat Number 4 for an unexpired term through January 10, 2017. General Municipal Election - November 8, 2016
There are seven members of the City Council elected at-large. There are four seats to be voted upon in the November 8, 2016 election: seats 4, 5, 6 and 7. City Council ratifies the certification of the results at the first regular meeting in January following the November election. Councilmembers in this election will serve a four-year term from January 10, 2017 to January 5, 2021. Change of Election Years in the City of Sunnyvale
At the November 5, 2013 General Municipal Election in Sunnyvale, voters approved Ballot Measure A, a charter amendment to change City elections from being held in November of odd-numbered years to being held in November of even-numbered years. The charter amendment provides that the next municipal election for City Council Members will be held in November 2016.
To facilitate the change from odd-year elections to even-year elections, the charter amendment authorized a one-time extension of one year to current Councilmembers’ terms.
- Current Councilmembers serving in Seats 4, 5, 6 and 7 who would have served until the first regular Council meeting in January following the November 2015 election will continue in office one additional year, until the first regular meeting in January following the November 2016 election.
- Current Councilmembers serving in Seats 1, 2, and 3 who would have served until the first regular Council meeting in January following the November 2017 election will continue in office one additional year, until the first regular meeting in January following the November 2018 election.
