Learning Solutions Group

The Learning Solutions Group (LSG) provides services and resources that support the university learning management system, STARS.  We encourage and support a diverse range of quality learning and development experiences. We focus on the target audience, development and delivery of the learning, tracking and enforcement of the learning, reporting, and evaluation. View our Service Level Agreement to see the nature and quality of services we provide.

Our work focuses on three key areas:

  • Learning and Training: We manage the business of learning and training with the goal of increasing the operational creativity and efficiency of the learning providers. We support the research, design, development, distribution, and result tracking of e-learning, videos, games and instructor-delivered courses, as well as outside-the-box strategies.
  • Risk Management and Compliance: We support and advocate for an enhanced enterprise risk management solution. Our solution comprises systems and business processes that support the delivery, tracking and reporting of compliance and regulatory training for Stanford faculty, staff, students, and visiting scholars.
  • Learning Management System: We support the university’s implementation of Oracle/PeopleSoft's Enterprise Learning Management System (LMS). Commonly known as STARS (Stanford Training And Registration System), it provides learners, managers, instructors and administrators with a centralized university-wide system for delivering and tracking professional development and compliance trainings.

Current Projects

ALL LEARNING PAGE (September 2015 Redesign)

With a fresh new look and feel, the redesigned All Learning Page makes it easier for learners to manage their learning activities. Key benefits of the change include:
•    Improved and streamlined user interface
•    Training status and actions highlighted to provide guidance to learners on next steps (e.g., enroll/register, launch/complete)
•    New design supports functionality to indicate required training assignments and due date (projected rollout in the upcoming year)

LEARNING PRESCRIPTION PROJECT

Learning Prescription is a program that provides a systematic approach to identify, communicate and track compliance training (defined as meeting regulatory requirements or reducing risk). The program is supported by an online tool within STARS that will allow the Stanford community to complete the following:

  • Learners that are required to take certain compliance training will be assigned training activities within STARS
  • Supervisors will be able to assure their team meets training requirements by providing ability to assign required training
  • Management will be able to produce meaningful reports across a broad range of compliance training programs

The university needs an improved capability to assign, communicate, track and monitor on compliance training to meet a variety of regulatory requirements and/or operational risks. Learning Prescription by its design, captures through a single system, an ability to capture who needs to take what training and through tracking of course activity, affords the ability to monitor and produce metric-based reports across an array of compliance training requirements.

The Learning Solutions Group gathered business needs with key stakeholders in early adoption departments within the School of Medicine (Genetics, Microbiology/Immunology, Pathology, Otolaryngology, Fiscal Affairs, IRT) and Dean of Research (KIPAC, CSLI and Nano Shared Facilities); and compliance programs offices (EH&S, FMS, VSC, UHR, SHPO and Privacy).

Timing

Starting in mid-August 2015, early adoption departments will begin to use Learning Prescription. A phased adoption strategy for the Stanford community is anticipated in throughout 2016.
