Accountability Charter
One of the ways in which CIVICUS has sought to enhance our own accountability has been our involvement in the International NGO Accountability Charter. CIVICUS was among leading international NGOs that came together five years ago to establish the INGO Accountability Charter. Also, as a signatory/member to the INGO Accountability Charter, we also make our Charter Compliance Report publicly available.
Gender and Diversity
Gender and Diversity are important aspects that civil society has to deal with on a daily basis. To strengthen citizen action and civil society participation, CIVICUS has, since the 2001 Vancouver World Assembly, chosen to incorporate gender and other diversity issues in all its programming and internal operations. CIVICUS has also adopted a rights based approach in its programming. At the centre of these are the rights of marginalised groups such as women, the disabled and those marginalised on racial grounds.
Guided by a Gender and Diversity Policy, as well as through information and toolkits shared by other organisations, our work incorporates gender and diversity lenses both externally and internally. The Human Resource Development Unit which houses the gender and diversity desk has strategized to develop human resources and the organisation in a gender and diversity focussed manner.
Youth Advisory Group
CIVICUS has convened a Youth Advisory Group to champion youth participation in civil society. The objectives of the group are to:
Following an extensive and open selection process between December 2012 and January 2013, looking for the right blend and balance of expertise on youth participation issues, CIVICUS appointed a diverse array of advisory group members to champion for Youth and their role in civil society.
Strategic Priorities
Authored by the CIVICUS Board of Directors, the 2013-2017 Strategic Priorities come at a period of renewal for the organisation and represent evolution for the global civil society alliance at a time of significant global change. Under these Strategic Priorities, CIVICUS will continue to strengthen civil society in areas where it has developed a strong track record - such as supporting civil society influence in decision making and protecting minimal standards for civil society against emerging threats.
Operational Plan (PDF)
During 2012, CIVICUS ran an extensive consultative process to shape new strategic priorities for the alliance between 2013 and 2017. After 22 consultations and survey responses from 502 participants, the findings are captured in a summary report, the CIVICUS Board of Directors, responsible for setting the organisation's strategy, authored a new document setting priorities for the coming five years.
