Gender and Diversity are important aspects that civil society has to deal with on a daily basis. To strengthen citizen action and civil society participation, CIVICUS has, since the 2001 Vancouver World Assembly, chosen to incorporate gender and other diversity issues in all its programming and internal operations. Initially through a Gender Task Force that was tasked to spearhead gender mainstreaming in programme activities and internal operations, CIVICUS sought to eliminate gender discrimination through a change of behaviour, assumptions, policies and programme decisions.
CIVICUS has adopted a rights based approach in its programming. At the centre of these are the rights of marginalised groups such as women, the disabled and those marginalised on racial grounds. Using gender and diversity lenses, CIVICUS seeks solutions in addressing social injustices that affect the world’s citizens through working with its members and partners. A dedicated desk on gender and diversity works with all CIVICUS units to ensure that gender and diversity are always streamlined into CIVICUS planning, reporting, monitoring and evaluation. Through ongoing training of staff, partnership building, knowledge generation and active participation at gender and diversity forums, CIVICUS perceives itself to be part of the movement that advocates for the respect of human rights through non-discrimination on the grounds of gender and other diversities.
Guided by a Gender and Diversity Policy, as well as through information and toolkits shared by other organisations, our work incorporates gender and diversity lenses both externally and internally. The Human Resource Development Unit which houses the gender and diversity desk has strategised to develop human resources and the organisation in a gender and diversity focussed manner.
