Bus Rapid Transit Program
VTA is upgrading transit service along Santa Clara County's three busiest transit corridors to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) status. These projects consist of improvements in technology and infrastructure as well as new vehicles that will allow riders on the Rapid 522 and Limited 323 routes to travel faster and more comfortably with more frequent service and better on-time reliability.
VTA's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Program consists of three projects (Click map for larger view):
Santa Clara-Alum Rock BRT Project
This project will upgrade the eastern portion of the Rapid 522 corridor between Downtown San Jose and the Eastridge Transit Center. The project would install new, bus-only lanes on Alum Rock Avenue between US101 and I-680 that will allow the BRT vehicles to bypass automobile congestion as well as rail-like stations that allow for fast, all door boarding. The project will begin construction in 2013 and new BRT vehicles will start operating from the Palo Alto Transit Center to the Eastridge Transit Center in early 2015. El Camino Real BRT Project
This project will upgrade the western portion of the Rapid 522 corridor between the Palo Alto Transit Center and Downtown San Jose. The project is currently in the planning stages and will begin environmental analysis on several project alternatives in the Spring of 2013. VTA has proposed converting one vehicle lane in each direction into a bus-only lane as well as installing bicycle lanes in some cities along the corridor. Stevens Creek BRT Project
This project will upgrade the Limited 323 service that currently travels along Stevens Creek Boulevard and San Carlos Street between De Anza College in Cupertino and the Downtown San Jose Transit Mall. Once operational, the BRT vehicles will travel from De Anza College to Downtown San Jose and then east to the Eastridge Transit Center along the Santa Clara-Alum Rock corridor.
