- I want to study Biodesign. What courses do you offer? How do I apply? Can you send me an application form?
-
We are not an academic department, that is, we do not offer a degree in Biodesign. For degree programs see the Biomechanical Engineering division of Mechanical Engineering Department or the Bioengineering Department.
We do offer a one-year fellowship to study the Biodesign process. Read more about that on our fellowship pages.
- How do I apply to the fellowship ?
-
Complete instructions are available on our fellowship pages. See our Stanford-India pages for information about that fellowship and our Singapore-Stanford Biodesign page for information about that fellowship.
- How much support does a fellow receive?
-
Fellows receive a monthly stipend which is equivalent to the stipend of a fellowship in Medical School. In addition, insurance, tuition and travel reimbursements are paid.
- Do you accept international students in the fellowship?
-
Yes, we provide documentation so that fellows may apply for a visa to stay at Stanford for one year. Indian citizens and Singaporean citizens may apply to our SIB and SSB fellowships and will also receive visas for their stay at Stanford.
- Do you have any other fellowship opportunities?
-
Yes, Indian Citizens may apply for the Stanford-India Biodesign Fellowship. We also have a short term fellowship opportunity with the FDA available to Stanford students. Singaporean citizens may apply for our Singapore-Stanford Biodesign fellowship.
- Do you have an MBA course?
-
Full details of the Stanford MBA can be found on the website of the Graduate School of Business.
- Where can I find information on biodesign courses?
-
Our website has a complete listing of biodesign-related courses for students at Stanford. Our program offers BioE 374, Biodesign Innovation, BioE 371 Global Biodesign and BioE 141, Biodesign Capstone for seniors.
- How many students are there in Biodesign?
-
There are over 300 students at Stanford who have some interest in Medical Device technology and design. There is a student group, Stanford Student Biodesign and Biopharma, that is quite active promoting events and courses. Each year we have between 16 and 20 fellows in the program. Our classes have 120-180 students each year.
- When was Biodesign founded?

The Biodesign program started in 2000 with a course and fellowship launched in 2001. At that time there were just a few faculty members and three staff. The program has grown and now has several fellowship opportunities, three courses, 20 faculty, 8 staff and many events throughout the year.
- When does the fellowship begin?
-
The Biodesign Innovation fellowship starts around August 1 each year. The Stanford-India Biodesign and Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Fellowships start around Jan 2.
- Where is Biodesign?
-
Biodesign is located in the James H. Clark Center at Stanford University.
