What is this event?

This event is similar to the Gear Up for Research day that the Engineering Library hosts.

We are using the Gear Up branding that the Science and Engineering Libraries have established as we feel it creates continuity and a more cohesive and collaborative outreach approach for library collections and services.

Please note: There will be a "Gear Up" in the Engineering Library this winter quarter, as well.

For This Fall-- Gear Up for Research will focus on Social Science Data Resources. The emphasis is on social science quantitative and qualitative data sources and tools.

The program includes:

Librarian's Table/Station:
We will have a SUL Librarians and Services table in the Jonsson Reading Room at the EXPO, so if you would like to contribute to this component, e.g. flyers, business cards, stickers, please contact us ASAP (Judy Marsh, Kris Kasianovitz, Regina Roberts) to discuss. We will be running the Subject Specialist slideshow at this "station".

Social Science Data EXPO:
It is an afternoon program, like an expo in the SSRC reading room (Jonnson Reading Room) with talks and hands-on demos from social science data vendors and providers to promote the data resources and tools in the social sciences that SUL currently collects and sponsors. We have invited 10 vendors to attend, 9 are currently confirmed. People will get a chance to talk to the vendor representatives and ask questions about their data resources.

• ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research)

• Sage Research Methods

• U.S. Census

30 Minute Data Talks:
Additionally, there will be Data Briefings in the SSRC classroom and the Velma Denning Room with invited speakers. We have invited Stanford faculty, staff and others to give these 30 minute talks.

Confirmed speakers:

• Adam Bailey of the Stanford Institutional Review Board (IRB) office who will talk about the IRB process on this campus

• Claudia Engel, Academic Technology Specialist in Anthropology who will talk about data visualizations using R

• Jon Stiles from UC Berkeley who will talk about the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers (RDCs)

• Bradley Spahn (Grad student in PoliSci)

• We are waiting to hear back from other invited speakers. (Sociology Dept Faculty)

The event has been be added to SUL's Workshop and Events website and we are running a PSA (public service announcement) on KZSU, the campus radio station.
