It gives me great pleasure to announce that Alesia Montgomery will be coming to Stanford University Libraries (SUL) as subject specialist for Sociology, Psychology, and Qualitative Social Science Data on November 14, 2016.

Alesia Montgomery served as an Assistant Professor of Sociology (75%) and AgBioResearch (25%) at Michigan State University. She also taught sociology courses at Queens College, CUNY.  Her areas of teaching and research have included urban ethnography, sociology of science and technology, environmental sociology, family studies, race/class/gender/sexuality, and social theory.

Alesia holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.  Before completing her PhD, she served as a Research Associate at the American Institutes for Research, where she engaged in nationwide studies of elementary and high schools.  After receiving her PhD, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team that included psychologists and anthropologists.  Her publications--which range from studies of high tech work in Silicon Valley to family routines in Los Angeles to urban greening in Detroit--share an underlying concern with how people learn to "read their world" (in the words of Paulo Freire) amid social, environmental, and technological change.

Outside of work, Alesia enjoys exploring city streets, nature trails, experimental theater, and civic tech/community tech.
