Adelante Comunidad: New exhibit showcases four decades of graphic arts by the Stanford Chicanx & Latinx community

Adelante Comunidad opens this week in the South Lobby of the East Wing of Green Library. The exhibit, which draws on posters and other materials from the collections of the Stanford University Archives, celebrates over four decades of graphic arts produced by the Stanford Chicanx and Latinx community. Many of the posters were transferred from El Centro Chicano y Latino earlier this year, and highlight educational events and speaking series sponsored by El Centro, and Stanford MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán).

Twenty-four years ago in June of 1994 Stanford University welcomed the world to its campus when a series of World Cup games were played at Stanford Stadium.  In honor of Stanford’s history and connection to the World Cup we at the library are hosting viewings of the 2018 World Cup.  Come join us in Green Library’s Tierney Room during this World Cup season where we will be live streaming all games during the library’s regular operating hours beginning on June 14th.   You may ask, what does the library have to do with

Recap of Stanford Hopkins Marine Station event on 28 April 2018

On Saturday, 28 April 2018, from 1:30-3:30 pm, 41 attendees from the ACS Silicon Valley Section and from Stanford University met at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) in Pacific Grove. 

For the first hour Dr. Amanda Whitmire, Head Librarian of Hopkins Miller Library and Assistant Director for the Station, covered the history of the Station and a long-term collaborative research project for collecting oceanographic data.   Her presentation also included her discovery of this data in the Library and her recent efforts to preserve and provide broader access to this data by having it digitized.

The Binding & Finishing Unit of the Preservation Department is hosting a tour which will answer these questions and many more! Laura Cameron, Operations Manager, and Richenda Brim, Head of Preservation will lead the group through the processes that transform an book from Amazon into a finished library book ready for circulation.

Chinese brush painting workshop and exhibition at East Asia Library

From May 19 through May 31, the East Asia Library will host a pop-up exhibition featuring works of traditional Chinese brush painting produced by students in the Continuing Studies course ART221: The Art of Chinese Brush Painting, taught by Dr. Felix Chan Lim and Dr. Bobbi Makani-Lim.  Dr. Lim and Dr. Makani-Lim will also host a workshop on Chinese brush painting at the East Asia Library on May 31.

Training for active threats at Green Library

The Stanford Department of Public Safety will be presenting their Active Threat Training at Green Library (IC Classroom). The training consists of a video presentation followed by a discussion about how individuals can increase their safety in violent situations. The session will be offered twice:
