Background

U.S. EPA Region 5 completed overseeing the removal of a large pile of smoldering wood waste at VIM Recycling Inc. A large pile of waste wood (known as the C Pile) and soil located at the north end of the site was releasing excessive smoke and odors into the neighborhood. In June 2009 EPA negotiated with VIM to clean up the waste and entered into a legal agreement called an administrative consent order. The order required the company to remove the smoldering debris by December 31, 2009.

Site Updates

The removal of the burning pile of wood waste was completed safely and on schedule on December 28, 2009. Over 90,000 yards of large scrap wood pieces were safely loaded onto over 1,200 trucks and sent to a nearby landfill. Over 60,000 yards of the remaining material, which resembles topsoil, was left on site in four long piles called windrows. Current plans call for incorporating this material into a manufactured soil product in accordance with state regulations. All activities related to EPA's Administrative Consent Order were completed by January 11, 2010, and the final progress report was submitted on January 12, 2010.
