Higher Levels of Care

At times a student’s psychological needs may exceed the scope of what can be provided at CAPS.  He or she may benefit from or require a higher level of care—an increase in frequency of treatment, closer monitoring, or a more structured treatment setting.  Higher levels of care generally include day treatment, residential treatment, inpatient hospital care, or a combination of these.

Day Treatment

Day treatment programs provide more frequent interactions with clinicians, group therapy, psychoeducational opportunities, and more support in general.

Residential Programs

Residential programs provide short-term, 24-hour support for students who require intensive treatment and structure, but do not need hospitalization.  Frequently students transition from residential treatment to day treatment programs prior to returning to their outpatient therapy.

Hospital Care

When required either for safety or for crisis management, a student may be hospitalized for short-term stabilization.  The CAPS Case Management Team will work with the student and the inpatient team to provide support and facilitate connection to university and clinical services.  After discharge from the hospital, CAPS Case Managers provide continued support in following through with the treatment team’s discharge recommendations.  Case Managers may also provide support in transferring care or in returning to school after a leave of absence.
