How to Use Service

Passengers can take care while riding bus or light rail to ensure their safety and help their trip go smoothly. Here are some good suggestions to help you get to your destination safely:

When Boarding Bus

When Boarding Trains

  • Stay away from the curb. Buses can pull in close to the curb, so stand a step or two back for your safety.
  • Do not run to catch the bus.  Running to catch the bus can be dangerous.
  • Use the hand rail when boarding the bus. For added convenience, operators can deploy the lift/ramp or kneel the bus
  • To avoid the risk of falling, do not rush and watch your step as you board the bus. Ask the operator if you  require assistance.
  • When boarding VTA Buses, Place exact fare in the fare box (drivers do not carry change)

  • Stay behind the tactile warning strip near the edge of the platform. Standing on the strip indicates that you are very close to the platform edge.
  • Do not run to catch the train.  Running to catch the train can be dangerous.
  • Wait for passengers to exit the train before boarding.
  • To avoid the risk of falling, do not rush and watch your step as you board the train.
  • Single Ride Light Rail Ticket It is valid for up to (2) hours in any direction only on Light Rail and Historic Trolley service. It is not acceptable toward the fare on bus service. Must have valid fare prior to boarding Light Rail

  On Board Bus

  On Board Train

  • Priority seating for seniors and people with disabilities is available at the front of the bus.
  • For your safety and convenience, VTA provides hand rails to use while walking to your seat.
  • Major stops are automatically announced. You may request from the operator to have your stop announced even if it's not a major stop.

  • Priority seating for seniors and people with disabilities is available on each train.
  • For safety and convenience, VTA provides hand rails to use while walking to your seat. This is especially important because the train operator can’t see when you have taken your seat.
  • All trains are equipped with emergency buttons to notify the operator if you need assistance.

Exiting Bus

Exiting Train

  • Be prepared to exit the bus before you arrive at your stop. Be sure to collect all of your personal belongings as VTA cannot be responsible for items left behind.
  • Please do not rush and watch your step as you exit.
  • You can exit from the rear door of the bus or the front. Use the front door if you need to use the ramp/lift or need the bus kneeled when you exit. Please watch your step as you exit.
  • The Night Stop Program is available during the evening hours and may allow us to drop you off at a safer or more convenient location.

  • Be sure to press the stop request strip before arrival at your station. Trains do not stop at some stations unless passengers request a stop or passengers are waiting to board.
  • Get ready to exit before you arrive at your station. Be sure to collect all of your personal belongings as VTA cannot be responsible for item left behind.
