Mountain view Double Track Construction Update

Construction Update
Friday, July 17, 2015

Overview:

This weekend VTA will be wrapping up a very productive eight days of near continuous construction activity on the Mountain View Light Rail Double Track Project.

During this time, almost all underground construction will have been completed; most foundations for overhead electrical system poles are in place, drainage systems and signaling device foundations have been dug and poured, and underground utility boxes and conduits are set. In addition, a majority of trackwork west of the SR 85 overcrossing is done.

These activities were accomplished during this week’s shutdown of light rail service between the Mountain View and Whisman stations, with substitute bus service being provided. VTA thanks its riders for their patience during the extended shutdown.

Light rail service returns to normal on Monday, July 20, 2015, following an extended light rail shutdown between the Mountain View and Lockheed stations this weekend. Crews will be working at the light rail crossing of Central Expressway near Whisman Road, as well as throughout the project area. Information on the substitute bus service being offered is available at www.vta.org.

What:

Activities will include building foundations for new overhead electrical system poles and traffic signal, trackbed and drainage installation work, electrical infrastructure work and materials delivery.

When:

Crews at the Central Expressway site are currently scheduled to work throughout the weekend, including Saturday early morning hours. Other work throughout the project area from Mountain View Transit Center to Whisman Station will primarily be during daytime hours, with likely some night activities.

Traffic Impacts:

There will be lane closures on Central Expressway throughout the weekend.

Mountain View Double Track Project

The Mountain View Double Track project, one of a series of projects known as the VTA Light Rail Train Efficiency Program, includes installing a second set of light rail tracks between the Mountain View and Whisman stations. The work will require the closure of the underutilized Evelyn Light Rail Station. The purpose of this project is to eliminate the current bottle neck caused by the single track operation in this area of Mountain View and provide storage space to stage multiple vehicles to service future BART service and special events at Levi’s Stadium.
