Big Construction Push Coming Labor Day Week

Mountain View Double Track Project
Construction Update

Multiple Crews to be Working Around the Clock

August 26, 2015

At the request of the community, VTA has significantly limited nighttime construction activities in the area between Central Expressway and Whisman Station and instead funneled most work into a condensed, continuous work period—during both day and night hours—that will begin Friday evening, September 4 and extend through early Monday morning, September 14, 2015.

During this time, new light rail track will be installed across eastbound Central Expressway and between Central Expressway and the Whisman Station. In the latter area significant work remains, including placing and welding heavy steel track, compacting the rock base underneath it, activating new signal and utility boxes, and demoing existing concrete foundations. Portions of Whisman Station Drive will also be excavated and precast concrete rail panels placed across the roadway.

This time period was selected to take advantage of the holiday weekend and the schedule of special events at Levi’s Stadium. The bulk of civil construction will wrap up in September, with overhead electrical system and signal testing continuing for the next several months.

Central Expressway will experience a major traffic shift between 8 p.m. Friday, September 4, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, with both eastbound and westbound traffic diverted to one side of the expressway. In addition, Whisman Station Drive will be closed at the light rail crossing for a similar period of time, possibly extending through Thursday, September 9.

There will be no light rail service between the Whisman and Mountain View light rail stations from Saturday, September 5, through Sunday, September 13. A separate light rail service notice will be issued with more information but Whisman Station area residents who travel to Mountain View Station on light rail are advised to allow extra time for their trips during this period.

Once it is available, more specific information for Whisman riders will be available at the platform and from VTA Customer Service, (408) 321-2300, TTY only (408) 321-2330.
